REMOVABLE AND FIXED DENTAL PROSTHESES

Types of dental prostheses: Fixed or removable?

Dental prostheses are dental elements created for various purposes: to replace missing teeth in the patient's mouth, to perform an aesthetic function in damaged teeth, and to rehabilitate the smile, effectively in all cases.

There are currently several types of dental prostheses. On the one hand, there are fixed dental prostheses and, on the other hand, there are removable dental prostheses. Current prostheses are usually very resistant, effective in their work and also optimal in terms of comfort for the patient.

FIXED DENTAL PROSTHESIS

When we talk about fixed dental prostheses, we are referring to those that cannot be easily removed, but remain in place. One of their characteristics is that they are tooth-supported, which is a term that means that they are supported completely and solely by the teeth.

Fixed dental prostheses can be of different styles: veneers, dental crowns and bridges.

  • Dental crowns: these are individual elements that are usually cemented onto the tooth, although they can also be cemented onto an implant. There are various types of dental crowns: metal, ceramic and a combination of metal and ceramic.

  • Bridges: These are elements that replace teeth, reproducing them perfectly, so that no one notices that they are not your teeth. In addition to the aesthetic function, they also provide you with new functionality to chew better.

  • Dental veneers: these are fixed dental prostheses that are applied to the external surface of the tooth. They are really thin sheets that are firmly attached to the tooth. Their function is clearly aesthetic, improving many alterations in the teeth, such as cracks, color or interdental separations.

REMOVABLE DENTAL PROSTHESIS

These dentures can be complete or partial.

  • Full dentures: Full dentures are for patients who have lost all of their upper (maxillary) or lower (mandibular) teeth, or both. Full dentures restore a patient's confidence, regaining their original appearance, and allowing them to speak and eat normally.

  • Partial dentures: For those who have lost some teeth but do not want dental implants or bridges, partial dentures are an affordable option. Removable partial dentures are held in place by natural teeth, elastic bands, and a resin and metal frame.
